I pulled the book out and nudged myself for a quick read once again.
Last Sunday, while I was rummaging through my bookshelf, I chanced upon “The ONE Thing”, which had occupied my shelf space for years. I read this book some years ago. I could recollect some remarkable points authors made about the simple truth behind extraordinary results. What’s your one thing today?
I’m sure you must have read the book too. But the point I want to make are slightly different, as they come in the context of the disruptions we are facing because of COVID-19 or the economy slump. We are now engulfed by challenges that seem unsurmountable in the short-run.
Which brings me to that “ONE Thing”.
So, what’s your ONE THING today?
Gary Keller and Jay Papasan emphasize the importance of shifting your thinking pattern to become more productive by asking yourself one simple question: What’s the ONE Thing I can do, such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?
This is a great question to ask, no doubt.
But when you’re forced to work from home with no real, in-person interaction with your team, is that question good enough? Not really! Our daily juggle between home and work life are far more challenging and stressful today.
Just like how it’s not easy to manage a business where some parts are on cloud and some are on-premise. It’s not easy at all.
The Right Question To Ask
Let’s rephrase this question a bit and see: What’s the one thing IN MY BUSINESS I can do TODAY, such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?
Rightly so the authors say: “Most people struggle to comprehend how many things don’t need to be done at all if they would just start by doing the right things. This elevates the answer’s potential to change your life by dong the leveraged thing and avoiding distractions.”
Surprisingly, when I asked this question to my friends who are running small and medium enterprises, I got this answer: “Protect my business from further disruption”.
